Complexity in Space Plasmas: Universality of Non-Equilibrium Physical Processes

چکیده
Several contributions of the Thrace group to magnetospheric, solar, and planetary physics over the last three decades are summarized from the perspective of a paradigm shift in nonlinear plasma physics. The work by Dennis Papadopoulos on plasma instabilities has been a source of inspiration for our magnetospheric studies including the introduction of the chaos hypothesis.

Complex non-equilibrium dynamics in plasmas
In this contribution we will discuss two new forms of strongly coupled plasmas which have become possible to create and observe in the laboratory only recently. They exhibit a wealth of intriguing complex behavior which can be studied, in many cases for the first time, experimentally. Plasmas, gases of charged particles, are universal in the sense that certain properties of complex behavior do ...
متن کاملUniversality in the off-equilibrium critical dynamics of the three-dimensional diluted Ising model.
We study the off-equilibrium critical dynamics of the three-dimensional diluted Ising model. We compute the dynamical critical exponent z and we show that it is independent of the dilution only when we take into account the scaling corrections to the dynamics. Finally, we will compare our results with the experimental data.
متن کاملRenormalization-group study of one-dimensional systems with roughening transitions.
A recently introduced real-space renormalization-group technique, developed for the analysis of processes in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, is generalized and tested by applying it to a different family of surface-growth processes. In particular, we consider a growth model exhibiting a rich phenomenology even in one dimension. It has four different phases and a directed percolation...
متن کاملCritical behavior of the two-dimensional spin-diluted Ising model via the equilibrium ensemble approach.
The equilibrium ensemble approach to disordered systems is used to investigate the critical behavior of the two-dimensional Ising model in the presence of quenched random site dilution. The numerical transfer matrix technique in semi-infinite strips of finite width, together with phenomenological renormalization and conformal invariance, is particularly suited to putting the equilibrium ensembl...
متن کاملEvidence of Large-Scale Quantization in Space Plasmas
In plasmas, Debye screening structures the possible correlations between particles. We identify a phase space minimum h* in non-equilibrium space plasmas that connects the energy of particles in a Debye sphere to an equivalent wave frequency. In particular, while there is no a priori reason to expect a single value of h* across plasmas, we find a very similar value of h* ≈ (7.5 ± 2.4)×10 J·s us...
